Takeout Style Sesame Noodles
If you love the taste of takeout sesame noodles but want a healthier, homemade version, this recipe is perfect for you. It’s packed with flavor, easy to make, and ideal for a quick lunch or dinner. The best part? You can customize it with your favorite vegetables or proteins.
Why Make Sesame Noodles at Home?
There’s something comforting about takeout, but making it at home has its perks:
- Control the Ingredients: No hidden oils or sugars.
- Healthier: Lower sodium and fresher ingredients.
- Quick & Easy: This recipe is ready in just 30 minutes.
- Customizable: Add veggies, chicken, or tofu for a complete meal.
I’ve always loved Chinese takeout, especially sesame noodles, but I don’t love the additives and extra oils that often come with it. That’s what inspired me to create my own homemade version—one that captures all the delicious flavors but is made with fresher, cleaner ingredients. It’s the perfect balance of nutty sesame flavor, savory soy sauce, and just a touch of sweetness, without any of the hidden extras. Best of all, it’s incredibly easy to whip up in your own kitchen!
What You’ll Need to Make Takeout Style Sesame Noodles
You will need the following tools:
- Knife- for mincing and slicing
- Cutting board
- Large pot- for boiling noodles and mixing ingredients
- Citrus zester- this is what we’ll use to grate the ginger
You will need the following ingredients:
- Noodles– I used spaghetti noodles for this recipe, but you could also use chow Mein or other noodles.
- Soy sauce
- Sesame oil
- Sugar– white granulated sugar
- Rice vinegar
- Vegetable oil
- Garlic– you can use fresh garlic and mince yourself or save some time and use minced garlic in a jar. Either will work!
- Ginger– I prefer to buy and grate my own ginger root, but you can also buy ginger paste at the grocery store that usually comes in a squeezable tube.
- Hot chili oil– you could also use Sriracha Hot chili sauce.
- Green onion
- Sesame seeds– not essential, but I love garnishing my noodles with sesame seeds!
How to Make Takeout Style Sesame Noodles at Home
First, you need to cook your noodles “al dente”. Check the package instructions for how to do this.
After the noodles are cooked, go ahead and drain the water and return the noodles to the pot.
Make sure not to add the pot back to the heat.
Next, get out a cutting board and thinly slice your green onions and mince the garlic.
For the ginger, you’ll want to grate it. I find that a citrus zester works best for this.
Now, add the sugar, soy sauce, sesame oil, hot chili oil, rice vinegar, and vegetable oil to the pot of warm noodles. Stir to combine.
Add green onions, garlic, and ginger. Mix well.
Finally, cover and the pot and let rest for 20 minutes, allowing the noodles to soak in all the ingredients.
FAQ’s about these Takeout Style Sesame Noodles
Can I eat these warm or cold?
This comes down to personal preference. Some prefer to eat them cold, while others prefer them warm. There’s no right or wrong way!
Will the sugar in the sauce dissolve?
Yes, the sugar will dissolve. Adding the ingredients while the noodles are still warm and resting for 20 minutes, allows the sugar to dissolve fully.
Can I mince the ginger?
I would recommend grating the ginger instead. Another great alternative would be to use a garlic press. Ginger root can be quite stringy in texture, so these methods work best for the consistency we need for this recipe.
