Guacamole is one of those timeless dishes that effortlessly elevates any gathering or meal. Whether you’re scooping it with crispy tortilla chips, dolloping it on tacos, or spreading it over toast, this easy chunky guacamole recipe is always a crowd-pleaser. It’s so simple, and with just a few fresh ingredients, you can whip up a version that rivals any restaurant’s.

Why Chunky Guacamole?

While smooth guacamole has its charm, a chunky version offers delightful texture. Each bite delivers bursts of fresh flavors—a perfect balance of creamy avocado, zesty lime, and crunchy vegetables. The chunks add depth and variety, making it feel more like a fresh salad than just a dip.

Tips for the Best Chunky Guacamole

  • Keep It Fresh: If you’re not serving the guacamole immediately, return the avocado seeds to the bowl and press a layer of plastic wrap directly onto its surface to minimize air exposure and prevent browning.
  • Customize to Taste: Adjust the ratio of ingredients based on your preference. Add more lime for tang, more jalapeño for heat, or more tomato for a refreshing pop of color.
  • Think Beyond Chips: While guacamole and chips are a classic combo, this dip pairs beautifully with grilled chicken, roasted veggies, or even as a burger topping.

Why Homemade Chunky Guacamole is Best

Store-bought guacamole often contains preservatives and lacks the vibrant, fresh taste you can achieve at home. Plus, making it yourself allows you to control the ingredients and adjust the flavors to your liking.

Fresh guacamole is one of my favorite things to make during the summer, when my garden is producing well.

While my climate doesn’t allow for growing my own avocados, I am able to grow an abundance of tomatoes, onions, jalapenos, and fresh herbs.

Ingredients Needed:

  • Avocados- 4-5 medium hass avocados. You want to make sure that you’re using ripe avocados.
  • Onion- red onion is what this recipe calls for. But, sweet onion or white/yellow onion will work as well!
  • Tomato- I like to use Roma tomatoes for an add in for guacamole. Vine tomatoes would be a great second option!
  • Garlic- I always prefer to use fresh garlic, but feel free to use garlic from a jar.
  • Cilantro- fresh cilantro works best! Use more or less if you prefer.
  • Jalapeno- remove the seeds and the ribs of the jalapeno, unless you like it really spicy!
  • Seasonings– Salt, pepper, and ground cumin.

Tools & Equipment Needed:

Another great thing about this easy chunky guacamole recipe is that it doesn’t require any fancy tools or equipment! But, here is a short list of what you will need, that you should have available in your kitchen.

Knife & Cutting Board- You’ll need a good, sharp knife to cut open the avocados. You will also need this to chop the veggies. I really love to use my veggie chopper for this recipe. It gives me uniform pieces and the chopping is finished in no time!

Mixing Bowl- You’ll need a fairly large mixing bowl. I prefer to use one that has a fitted lid, so I only have to dirty one bowl!

How to Make Chunky Guacamole

To make a chunky guacamole, the key is to strike the right balance between mashing and leaving ingredients in visible pieces. Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

Start with Perfect Avocados: Ripe avocados are the heart of any good guacamole. Look for ones that yield slightly to gentle pressure but aren’t overly soft. Cut them in half, remove the pit, and scoop the flesh into a bowl. For the perfect chunky consistency, mash lightly with a fork—just enough to break it up while leaving some larger pieces intact.

Add Fresh Ingredients: Diced red onion, chopped tomatoes, and minced jalapeño add vibrant flavors and texture. Be sure to seed the jalapeño if you prefer a milder guacamole. Fresh cilantro is also a must for that classic guacamole taste.

Season to Perfection: Lime juice is essential for flavor and helps prevent the avocados from browning. Add cumin, salt, and freshly ground pepper to taste.

Mix with Care: When combining the ingredients, fold them together gently to preserve the chunky texture. Avoid overmixing, as it can quickly turn your guacamole into a smoother consistency.
